Karen Sotelino

Dr. Karen Sotelino is a Visiting Scholar at U.C. Berkeley. She holds a B.A. in International Relations from Stanford University and an M.A. and PhD in Literature from U.C. Santa Cruz. Her literary translations include the novels Lavoura arcaica (Ancient Tillage, Penguin UK, New Directions) by 2016 Camões Prize recipient Raduan Nassar; Ressurreição (Latin American Literary Review Press) by Machado de Assis; and Os pobres (The Poor, Dalkey Archive) by 19th century Portuguese author Raul Brandão, for which she received the Luso-American Foundation Gregory Rabassa Fellowship. Dr. Sotelino has nine published articles on literary translation theory (Hispania, US; Revista Portuguesa de Humanidades and Revista de Letras, Portugal; Tempo e Memória, Brazil). Dr. Sotelino has lectured extensively at Stanford University (Portuguese language and literary translation), most recently in 2016, when she taught a seminar on translation theory. She is currently working on two literary translations, one contemporary and one 19th century.
